RO: De-ar fi să numim orașul cu cea mai impresionantă așezare geografică din lume, ei bine, fără doar și poate ar fi Rio de Janeiro. De-ar fi să ne gândim la orașul cu cea mai plăcută atmosferă și locul în care ne-ar plăcea să locuim, cu siguranță ar fi Amsterdam. De-ar fi să alegem un loc exotic în care ne-am întoarce mereu fără să stăm prea mult pe gânduri, probabil că am zice Singapore. De ne-am dori natură și plimbări prin mijlocul pustietății, am oscila între Feroe și Islanda. De ni s-ar face dor de călătorii cu mașina, am răsfoi prin pozele din Noua Zeelandă. Iar de am vrea o destinație de răsfăț culinar, am alege pentru a nu știm câtă oară Montreal-ul. Dar dacă ar fi s-avem câte puțin din toate, ei bine, Vancouver este cel mai potrivit mix cu așezarea sa perfectă, absolut perfectă între ocean și munți, cu atmosferă atât de plăcută din centrul vechi și cartierele “hipsteresti” ca Yaletown, Gastown și Olympic Village, cu plajele și promenadele demențiale, cu toate activitățile și atracțiile din mijlocul naturii, cu peisajele și drumurile spectaculoase din jur și-apoi cu toate restaurantele și mâncărurile delicioase! Și chiar dacă toate acestea se confirmă mai ales pe timp de vară, când parcă poți profita la maxim de tot ce are orașul (și întreaga provincie British Columbia) de oferit, vom detalia in articolele noastre ce se poate face în zonă într-o săptămână friguroasă tare de februarie. Și da, poate părea previzibil ca în Canada să fie frig, să plouă și mai ales să ningă pe timp de iarnă, însă în Vancouver rareori se întâmplă acest lucru; ba chiar dimpotrivă, în mod normal temperaturile sunt de aproximativ 10 grade în februrie. Însă am reușit să aducem gerul est european cu noi și iată cum am nimerit să venim în Vancouver fix în una dintre cele mai mari căderi de zăpadă din ultimii foarte mulți ani.

EN: If we were to name the city with the most impressive geographic settlement, well, we would definitely say Rio de Janeiro. If we were to think about the city with the most pleasant atmosphere and the place where we would like to live, it would certainly be Amsterdam. If we were to choose an exotic place where we would always go back, without thinking twice, we would probably say Singapore. If we were to consider nature and walks through wilderness, we wouldn’t not know what to choose between Iceland and the Faroe Islands. If we were to miss road tripping, we would browse through the pictures taken in New Zealand. And if we would long for a culinary indulgence destination, we would choose Montreal for the umpteenth time. But if we were to have a little bit of all these in only one place, oh well, Vancouver is the perfect mix with its perfect settlement, absolutely perfect, between ocean and the mountains, with that pleasant atmosphere in the old town center and in the hipsterish neighborhoods like Yaletown, Gastown or the Olympic Village, with its gorgeous beaches and promenades, with all the activities and attractions in the middle of the nature, with its stunning scenery and spectacular surrounding highways and with all those restaurants and delicious foods! And even though all these are confirmed especially during summer time, when one can enjoy the city (and the entire province British Columbia) at its best, we will write in our articles what can be done in the area in a really cold week in February. And yup, it might seem predictable to rain and especially to snow in Canada, but in Vancouver this rarely happens. On the contrary, the temperatures are normally around 10 degrees in February. But somehow we managed to bring the East European cold and that’s how we ended up in Vancouver during one of the biggest snowfall in years.






RO: Vancouver “defileaza” cu renumele de a fi unul dintre orașele cu cea mai bună calitate a vieții din lume și unde oamenii își doresc nespus de mult să trăiască-atâta doar că mulți dintre ei nu își permit să o facă, având în vedere costurile uriașe ale apartamentelor (de case nu vorbim, prețurile devin de-a dreptul SF-uri frustrante). Din nefericire, Vancouver se află și în topul celor mai scumpe orașe din lume, piața imobiliară pur și simplu a luat-o razna în ultima vreme, iar lucrul acesta rezultă în mod neplăcut în multe probleme sociale, principala fiind numărul ridicat al oamenilor străzii. Știam de acest lucru și ne așteptam să vedem asta (în mod special în zona străzii East Hastings, cu un renume nu tocmai plăcut), însă din păcate problema această e mult mai pregnantă decât se mediatizează. Nu facem niciun fel de comparație cu San Francisco, nu știm cum este și nici nu are importanță, cert că e în Vancouver devine o problemă din ce în ce mai mare și e cu atât mai dramatică situația considerând faptul că mare parte din oamenii străzii sunt oameni tineri, până în 25 de ani. Astfel că pare un paradox faptul că Vancouver este listat ca unul dintre cele mai dorite orașe din lume sau unul dintre orașele cu cea mai bună calitate a vieții, în vreme ce întregul centru al orașului e înțesat de oameni care își trăiesc viața pe stradă, cu toate bunurile strânse într-un cărucior de supermarket. Iar localnicii încep să migreze către alte orașe din British Columbia, unde își pot permite să trăiască și să se întrețină. Fără să contestăm renumele Vancouver-ului, însă după numai două săptămâni de stat prin zonă, am spune că toate superlativele apărute în online au fost scrise de cei care își permit apartamente de lux cu vedere spre False Creek, și nu ar fi o problemă, însă crează o imagine nu tocmai realistă. Realitatea, neplăcută de altfel, scoate la iveală faptul că pătura de mijloc aproape că nu există în Vancouver: fie ești bogat (eventual expat), fie ești om al străzii. Sau cel puțin aceasta e direcția înspre care se îndreaptă orașul…

EN: Vancouver is proudly wearing the reputation of being one of the cities with the highest quality of life in the world, where people want to live – just that they cannot afford to do it, considering the huge price of the apartments (not to mention the houses, where the prices reach some pretty frustrating science fiction standards). Unfortunately, Vancouver is also one of the most expensive cities in the world, the housing market has gone crazy in the last few years and this has led to many social problems, the main one being the high number of homeless people. We knew about this and we were expecting to see this (especially around the infamous East Hastings street) but we were surprised to see that this issue is more serious than advertised. We won’t make any kind of comparison with San Francisco, we don’t know the situation there and in the end it’s not relevant at all, what is certain is that this is a real issue in Vancouver and it becomes more and more dramatic as the number of young homeless people (below 25 years) is higher and higher. So it might seem a paradox the fact that Vancouver is considered one of the most liveable places in the world or one of the cities with the highest quality of life in the world, when the entire town center is filled with homeless people, walking on the streets with all their belongings in a supermarket trolley. And the locals seem to migrate from Vancouver to other towns in British Columbia, where they can afford to live and support their families. We’re not challenging Vancouver’s fame, but after two weeks spent here, we would say that all the superlatives written in the online media are written by people who can afford luxury apartments at False Creek and that wouldn’t be a problem but it just creates unrealistic expectations. Reality, the unpleasant reality, reveals the fact that you are either rich (most probably an expat), either homeless. Or at least this is where the city is heading to…





RO: Trecând însă peste costul ridicat al vieții în Vancouver și peste vreme (există un motiv întemeiat pentru care porecla orașului este Raincouver :D), orașul are atuurile sale de necontestat: se află fix între munții acoperiți de zăpadă și ocean, are plaje superbe, parcuri uriașe, o atmosferă mult, mult mai relaxată (de altfel specifică coastei de vest) și un mix aproape paradoxal de zgârie nori înalți, sticloși (așa se explică de ce este supranumit Orașul de Sticlă) și clădiri în stil eduardian. De altfel, mulți spun că ar fi cel mai frumos oraș al Canadei (însă vom fi extrem de subiectivi și îi vom contrazice, punând Montreal-ul în top :D). Cu toate acestea, în primă fază, Vancouver nu ne-a impresionat în mod deosebit. În primele câteva zile am încercat să ne dăm seama de ce are atâta faimă și de ce își doresc atât de mult oamenii să locuiască aici. Poate că nu am nimerit cel mai potrivit sezon (cu siguranță vara orașul se transformă, dar lucrul acesta este valabil și pentru multe alte orașe canadiene), însă ce am realizat după cele două săptămâni petrecute aici e faptul că Vancouver e genul acela de oraș care te convinge greu. Trebuie să petreci timp să îl descoperi, să îl cunoști, să te plimbi, să îi simți atmosfera, și-abia atunci înțelegi ca nu e despre obiective turistice, muzee, arhitectură sau istorie. E despre starea de bine pe care ți-o dă o plimbare în Stanley Park, atmosfera plină de viață din cartierul Gastown, partea veche a orașului, mâncarea mult prea bună din Yaletown, clădirile frumoase din Olympic Village, terasele de pe Granville Island, priveliștile de pe Grouse Mountain, ori stațiunile Squamish sau Whistler Village. Abia când realizezi că Vancouver are de toate pentru toți, începând de la centrul financiar cosmopolit și fistichiu (da, turnul Trump chiar există!) până la cartierele boeme și hipsteresti.

EN: But going over the high cost of life in Vancouver and also over the weather (there’s a good reason why the city is nick named Raincouver :D) the city has its undeniable cards up its sleeves: situated right between the snow capped mountains and the ocean, it has gorgeous beaches, huge parks, a much more relaxed atmosphere (actually typical for the entire west coast), and an almost paradoxical mix of glassy sky scrapers (that’s why the city is also known as the City of Glass) and Edwardian style buildings. Besides, people say that this is the most beautiful city in Canada (although we will be extremely subjective and disagree, as for us Montreal is the most beautiful city in Canada). However, knowing all these things, once we got to Vancouver, we weren’t quite impressed. In the first few days we tried to understand why is this city so famous and why are people mad about living here. Maybe we weren’t visiting it in the best season (for sure during summer time the vibe of the city changes completely, but that happens in other Canadian cities as well), but what we realized after two weeks spent here is the fact that Vancouver is a hat type of city that needs more time to convince you. You have to spend time here to get to know it, to discover it, to walk around, to feel the vibe and then you can understand that it’s not about touristic places to see, museums, architecture or history. It’s about the well being you feel when you walk in Stanley Park, the atmosphere full of life in Gastown, the old part of the city, the way too good food you’ll find in Yaletown, the beautiful buildings in the Olympic Village, the terraces on the Granville Island, the views from Grouse Mountain or Squamish and Whistler Village. That’s when you actually realize that Vancouver has it all, starting with the cosmopolite and fancy financial district (yup, Trump Tower really exists!) and ending with bohemian and hipsterish neighborhoods.





RO: Ce este însă surprinzător este faptul că Vancouver cel cosmopolit nu este capitala provinciei British Columbia, cum am fi fost tentați să credem 🙂 Ci mititica Victoria, la aproximativ 100 km distanță de Vancouver, unde din păcate nu am reușit să ajungem. Cu toate acestea, Vancouver este de departe “vedeta” provinciei, eclipsând capitala când vine vorba de turism. Însă amândouă sunt renumite pentru clima prietenoasă (da, câțiva centimetri de zăpadă dau peste cap complet orașele), ba chiar Victoria pare să fie de două ori mai însorită ca vecinul Vancouver și mult mai puțin ploioasă (în Vancouver mai bine de jumătate de an plouă, plouă și iar plouă), piața imobiliară în Victoria este ceva mai liniștită, orașul în sine este mai calm, mai puțin agitat și haotic.

EN: What is surprising though is the fact that the cosmopolite Vancouver is not actually the capital of British Columbia province, as we would be tempted to believe 🙂 Tiny Victoria is, at approximately 100 km away from Vancouver, but unfortunately we didn’t managed to visit it. However, Vancouver is by far the “star” of the province, totally outrunning the capital when it comes to tourism. But both of them are renowned for the friendly climate (yup, it rarely snows and when it happens, those few centimeters of snow completely puzzle both cities), Victoria is actually even sunnier and less rainy than Vancouver (where it rains and rains for more than half a year), the housing market in Victoria is not that crazy as it is in Vancouver, and all in all, the city is less chaotic and way much calmer. While Vancouver is the City of Glass, Victoria is the City of Gardens, with strong British influences, maybe one of the most European cities in North America (the British accent of the locals is missing though :D).






RO: Cât despre costuri… ei bine da, faima orașului este adevărată, o confirmăm cu vârf și îndesat. Orașul este extrem de scump, cu siguranță unul dintre cele mai scumpe pe care le-am văzut vreodată. Cazările sunt infernal de scumpe, hotelurile aproape de neatins iar AirBnB-ul are un statut destul de dubios în Vancouver. Este singurul oraș canadian în care s-au impus niște reguli foarte stricte (cel care listează apartamentul trebuie să stea în respectivul loc și nu sunt permise închirierile pe mai mult de 30 zile-mai multe detalii aici). E incredibil unde a dus criza (da, chiar e o criză) imobiliară în Vancouver, unde multe apartamente sunt cumpărate de expați și apoi închiriate turiștilor (în timp ce trotuarele din centru sunt pline de oameni ai străzii). Cu toate acestea, în prima săptămână în Vancouver am reușit să închiriem un apartament listat pe AirBnB (o casă chiar) în centru (nu vom lăsa linkul direct în articol pentru a nu îi face rău proprietarului), însă am primit instrucțiuni clare de a ne feri să dăm informații despre apartament iar în cazuri extreme în care ar fi fost nevoie de explicații, să spunem că suntem prieteni veniți în vizită. În cea de-a două săptămână am stat la hotel The Sutton Place, chiar în Downtown.  

EN: As for the costs… oh well, yes, the city’s fame is real, we can totally confirm it. The city is extremely expensive, for sure one of the most expensive ones we’ve ever seen. The accommodation is way too expensive, the hotels are completely inaccessible and AirBnB has a pretty strange status in Vancouver. It is the only Canadian city where there are some pretty strict rules (the person who lists the apartment on AirBnB must actually live there and the rentals for more than 30 days are not permitted – more details here). It is incredible what standards the housing crisis in Vancouver has reached (because yes, indeed, there is a real crisis), where lots of apartments are owned by expats and then rented to tourists (while the sidewalks in Downtown are filled with homeless people). However, in the first week we’ve spent in Vancouver we managed to rent an AirBnB apartment (actually an entire house) right in the city center (we will not leave the link of the apartment in this article so that we will not harm the owner), but we received clear instructions to avoid giving details about the apartment and in the unlikely case when someone would have asked us something, to say that we were just friends visiting. In the second week we stayed at The Sutton Place, in Downtown.











RO: Deși planul inițial a fost să închiriem mașină încă de la început, gândindu-ne că vom avea mai multă flexibilitate și mobilitate, ulterior am realizat că nu aveam nevoie. Pentru ce voiam să vedem în Vancouver ne-am descurcat fără probleme mergând pe jos, distanțele nu erau atât de mari, iar transportul în comun este foarte bine pus la punct. Și chiar distractiv pentru cei mici am tinde să spunem: bărcuțe Aquabus, micuțe și colorate, care traversează False Creek pentru a ajunge pe Granville Island, Skytrain-ul suspendat pentru transferuri de la aeroport până în centrul orașului, feriboturi uriașe pentru a ajunge în partea de nord a Vancouver-ului (le-am testat pe toate doar de dragul experienței cu fiecare dintre ele, chiar dacă am fi putut la fel de ușor să conducem). În plus, costurile de inchiere sunt destul de prohibitive iar locurile de parcare o adevărată provocare; o zi de parcare la hotelul unde am stat costa 40 de dolari canadieni, iar în centrul orașului este aproape imposibil să găsești un loc de parcare în timpul zilei (sunt puține, foarte scumpe și de regulă staționarea e limitată la maxim două ore). Am închiriat însă mașini pentru o singură zi (am fost șase persoane și doi bebeluși), pentru a ajunge în partea de nord, la cascada Shannon și stațiunea Whistler. Am fi inclus în itinerariu și o scurtă vizită în Seattle, însă nu avem încă vize pentru Statele Unite 🙂 Pentru faimosul pod suspendat Capilano am ales să mergem tot cu transportul în comun (feribot și apoi autobuz), și a fost incredibil de ușor și rapid (ulterior chiar am aflat că există și un transfer gratuit pentru a ajunge la parcul Capilano). Așadar am zice că nu este absolut nevoie de mașină închiriată dacă planurile de călătorie nu includ excursii înafara orașului (iar pe timp de iarnă, cu un bebeluș mic, parcă nici nu sunt neapărat recomandate).

EN: Even though the initial plan was to rent a car from the very beginning, thinking that we will have more flexibility and mobility, we then realized that we didn’t actually need it. For what we planned to see in Vancouver it was more than enough to walk, the distances were quite small and the public transport is very organized. And actually quite fun for our little ones: Aquabus small boats, tiny and colorful, crossing the False Creek to get to Granville Island, the suspended Skytrain for transfers from the airport right in the city center, huge ferries for getting to the north part of Vancouver (we tested them all just for the sake of trying them, even if we could easily drive to all these destinations). Besides, the rental car costs are quite prohibitive and finding a parking lot can be quite a challenge; a day of parking at the hotel where we stayed was 40 Canadian dollars, and in the city center it is almost impossible to find a parking lot during the day (there are just a few, extremely expensive and the parking is usually limited at maximum 2 hours). But we did rent cars for one day (we were six adults and two babies), to get to in the north part, at Shannon Falls and Whistler Village. We could have included a short trip to Seattle but we still don’t have visas for the United States J For the famous Capilano Suspension Bridge we have chosen public transport as well (ferry and bus), it was incredibly easy and fast (afterwards we found out that there is also a free transfer to get to Capilano Park). So we would say that it is not absolutely necessary to rent a car if the travelling plans do not include trips outside the city (and during winter time, with such a young baby, these are not quite recommended).




RO: Urmează să descriem în detaliu itinerariul ales de noi, atât în oraș cât și înafara lui, plus câteva alte recomandări de atracții pe care nu am apucat să le vedem (în principiu din cauza vremii). Cert e că Vancouver, la fel ca întreaga provincie British Columbia au multe de oferit, în special pentru cei cărora le plac aventurile în natură. Probabil că vom reveni în Vancouver, însă vom alege o perioadă mai călduroasă, ca să ne putem bucura din plin de oraș și împrejurimi. Am fost în Canada de foarte multe ori deja, însă rareori vara. Și chiar ar merita explorată mai mult pe vreme călduroasă, peisajele sunt absolut demențiale. Mai jos am lăsat o colecție de poze din British Columbia, găsită pe Instagram. EN: We will soon write more details about the itinerary that we have chosen, inside and outside the town, plus some recommendations of attractions that we did not manage to see (mainly due to the bad weather). One thing is certain, Vancouver, as well as the entire British Columbia province, have much to offer, especially for those that are interested in nature adventures. We will probably come back in Vancouver, but we will choose a warmer season, so that we can enjoy more the city and its surroundings. We’ve been to Canada so many times already, but we’ve rarely visited during summer time. And this region is really worth exploring, the landscapes are truly magnificent.
