RO: N-o fi el micuțul (de altfel cică marele, după cum îi spune numele :D) ducat al Luxemburgului cel mai important atu al Europei când vine vorba de turism, și-or spune mulți că poate fi plictisitor, neinteresant și lipsit de farmecul tipic Europei de Vest, poate prea plin de bănci, corporații, clădiri de sticlă și birouri ale Uniunii Europene, însă noi am zice că lucrurile nu stau tocmai asa  Prins la mijloc între Belgia, Germania și Franța, Luxemburg este într-adevăr unul dintre cele mai mici state europene (chiar dacă San Marino, Vatican, Andorra, Liechtenstein-ul-cu care se bate cot la cot pentru supremația bogaților :D, Malta ori Monaco or fi chiar mai mititele decât piticania Benelux-ului), Luxemburg e până una alta țara cu cel mai mare PIB pe cap de locuitor din lume! Sau hei, poate Qatar să o mai detroneze. Și or avea foarte multe instituții europene sediul aici, și-o fi aici un adevărat paradis fiscal, însă capitala chiar are o mulțime de cartiere pitorești și-un centru vechi de toată frumusețea, recunoscut până și de mai marele Unesco – păi nu vorbim despre unul dintre cele mai mari orașe fortificate din toatăăăăăă Europa? 🙂 Și doar n-o să uităm să menționăm că Luxemburg este singurul mare ducat rămas în lume!

EN: Maybe the tiny duchy of Luxembourg (actually the grand one as the name calls it :D) might not Europe’s ace up the sleeve when it comes to tourism, and some people might say that it can be boring, dull or that it is lacking the west European charm, having too many banks, corporations, glassy buildings and European Union offices, but we would dare to say the contrary 🙂 Caught in the middle between Belgium, Germany and France, Luxembourg is indeed one of the smallest countries in Europe (even if San Marino, Vatican, Andorra, Liechtenstein – competing against it for the rich people supremacy :D, Malta or Monaco are even smaller that the tiniest country in Benelux), Luxembourg is in the end the country with the highest GDP per capital in the world! Hmmm, hey, maybe just Qatar can over pass it. And yes, indeed, there are a lot of EU institutions in here, and this might be a real tax haven, but the capital of Luxembourg has quite a lot of picturesque neighborhoods and such an amazing old city town, part of the Unesco World heritage – we’re actually talking about one of the biggest fortified cities in the entireeeeeeee Europe! And hey, we have to mention that Luxembourg is the only grand duchy left in the world!  

RO: Adevărul e că sunt atât de multe mituri despre Luxemburg și recunoaștem că și noi am venit cu câteva idei preconcepute (cu o parte din ele ne-am și întors de altfel însă per total, impresia totală e una pozitivă :D). Una dintre ele ar fi faptul că am fi băgat mâna în foc că este țara bătrânilor bogați, plictisiți de viață, care se retrag în glorie și lux să își cheltuiască liniștiți pensiile colosale 😀 Ei bine, nu-i chiar așa. Într-o zi de sâmbătă străzile Orașului de Sus sunt pline de magazine, tineri, concerte și turiști. Unde mai pui că aproape jumătate din populația Luxemburg-ului e formată din expați, așa că toată diversitatea asta culturală și etnică chiar dă un farmec aparte orașului. Companii din toată lumea și-au deschis sedii în Luxemburg, aducând forță de muncă tânără, în special în sectorul bancar și IT (păi aici își au sediile europene Skype, Paypal și mai marele Amazon), creând o societate multiculturală. Ba chiar mulți dintre cei care lucrează în Luxemburg trăiesc în țările din apropiere, cei mai mulți făcând zi de zi naveta din Franța (nici nu-i de mirare că auzi franceza pe toate drumurile), din Belgia ori Germania. Apropo, țărișoara asta minusculă are trei limbi oficiale, franceza, germana și luxemburgheza, un mix dubios între primele două 🙂 Și dac-ar fi să nu mai ascultăm noi de vocile rele, faptul că orașul Luxemburg a fost desemnat de două ori capitală europeană (o dată in 1995 și-a doua oară în 2007), ar trebui să ne convingă să îi dăm cel puțin o șansă 🙂

EN: Truth is that there are so many myths about Luxembourg and we have to admit that we also had some preconceived ideas (we still have some of them but over all the impression was a positive one :D). The first one would be the fact that we really thought that this is the land of rich old people, bored by their life, retired here to enjoy their grey hair in luxury and spend their colossal pensions in peace 😀 Oh well, things are not quite true. On a Saturday evening, the streets of the Upper Town are full of shops, young people, concerts and tourists. And then, guess what, almost half of Luxembourg population is formed by expats, so all this cultural and ethnic diversity gives a special charm to the city. Companies from all over the world have opened offices in Luxembourg, bringing young work force, especially in banking and IT field (what do you know, Skype, Paypal and the grand Amazon have their European headquarters here), creating a multicultural society. And actually most of the people working in Luxembourg live abroad, in the nearby countries, commuting every day from France (no wonder we can hear French all over the place!), from Belgium or Germany. And by the way, this tiny country has three official languages, French, Germany and Luxembourghish, a weird mix of the first two 🙂 And the fact that the capital has been named twice European Capital (once in 1995 and then in 2007), it should totally convince us to give Luxembourg a fair show 🙂 










RO:  Gluma-i glumă, dar luxemburghezilor nu le place deloc să li se spună că țara lor este mică ori și mai rău, cum că ar fi vreun micro-stat 🙂 Așa că nu mică să ne fie mirarea când vom găsi pe străzi și-n stațiile de autobuz afișe care demonstrează că de fapt și de drept, Luxemburg e mai mare ca Singapore, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Malta, Andorra și Monaco la un loc!

EN: Ok, but enough joking, as Luxembourgers really hate hearing that their contry is tiny or even worse than that, that it is called a micro-state 🙂 So no wonder that we’ll find everywhere on the streets or in the bus stations posters that prove the fact that Luxembourg is actually bigger than Singapore, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Malta, Andorra and Monaco combined! 

RO:  Bun, și-acum că să fim sinceri, pornind de la premisa unui mix frantuzo-nemțesc, ar fi fost tare dificil să nu ne placă Luxemburg 🙂 Și când ni se promit castele (păi cum e cu superbitatea de Palat Ducal?!), miros de ciocolată (au avut ce învață și de la vecinii belgieni, chiar ne miram unde sunt alcoolul și dulciurile?!), concerte în aer liber (și nu, nu ne referim la cele de la Filarmonica Luxemburg, ci la cele din mijlocul piețelor, așa ad-hoc :D), cum să nu ne lăsăm impresionați? 🙂 Apropo, pentru iubitorii de dulciuri, în Luxemburg e nebunia nebuniilor. Ciocolata e extrem de renumită și gustoasă (hmmm… nu știm dacă detronează Neuhas-ul belgian daaaaar :D), iar principalele trei branduri sunt Oberweis, Namur și Kaempff Köhler. Și slavă cerului, s-au inspirat luxemburghezii și după copiuța francezilor (nu doar a belgienilor :D), pentru că e plin centrul vechi de macaronsi apetisanți 🙂

EN: Ok, and now, let’s be honest, starting from the German-French mix premise, it would really be hard not to like Luxembourg 🙂 And when there are castles on the list (like the gorgeous Grand Ducal Palace), smell of chocolate (they actually learned their lessons from the Beligum neighbors, we were really asking ourselves where’s the alcohol and the sweets?!), open-air concerts (and nope, we’re not referring to those ones from Philharmonie Luxembourg but to those held in the middle of the markets, when you least expect :D) how could we not be impressed? 🙂 And by the way, for all the sweet lovers out there, Luxembourg is a total madness when it comes to sugar. Chocolate is extremely renowned and so tasty (hmmm, we don’t know if it’s better that the Belgium Neuhaus buuuuut :D) and the main three brands are Oberweis, Namur and Kaempff Kohler. And thanks god that the Luxembourgers got some inspiration from the French people as well, as the old city center is full of appealing macarons 🙂 









RO: Centrul orașului, deși ar părea că-i mic și deloc complex, este divizat în Orașul de Sus, cel mai plin de viață și gălăgie, și Orașul de Jos (numit și Grund), pe care-l vezi de sus, de pe cornișă, cu toate casele tradiționale înșirate de-a lungul râului Alzette, ceva mai amorțit și mai liniștit. Înțelegem de ce i se spune cornișei “cel mai frumos balcon al Europei” 🙂 Si n-avem ce zice, priveliștile sunt chiar impresionante, mai ales la început de toamnă, cu toate culorile turbate și saturate, acoperișurile gri și podul Adolphe undeva în depărtare.

EN: The town center, although it might seem small and not that complex, is divided in the Upper Town, the one full of life and hustle and bustle, and the Lower Town (known as the Grund), which you cansee from up above the corniche, with all those traditional houses lined along the Alzette river. We do understand now why people consider the corniche “the most beautiful balcony in Europe” 🙂 The views are indeed impressive, especially during fall, with all those mad and saturated colors, the grey rooftops and the Adolpje bridge somewhere at a distance. 













RO: De altfel, Grund-ul este bijuteria Luxemburg-ului, poate că cea mai atrăgătoare parte a orașului, și adevărul e că modul în care a fost construit, de parc-ar sta într-o râpă înconjurată de jur împrejur de stânci abrupte, îl face să pâră mai dramatic și mai spectaculos 🙂 Aproape că nu-ți vine a crede că sus, peste dealurile fortificate și Cazematele Bock (labiritul acela faimos de tuneluri subterane săpate în stâncă), se află cartiere întregi de clădiri moderne și birouri care formează centrul financiar al orașului 🙂 Iar întreg centrul vechi e plin de localuri drăguțe, restaurante fițoase (multe dintre ele mândre purtătoare de stele Michelin) și baruri de vinuri cât vezi cu ochii. Păi cine ar fi zis că o țărișoară atâta de mică ar putea fi chiar producătoare (nu doar degustătoare :D) de vinuri bune? Păi partea de sud est a țării, în preajma râului Moselle e plină de podgorii din care luxemburghezii fac un vin sec demențial! Și-unul spumant și mai și, cremant cum îi spun luxemburghezii-un soi de șampanie locală.  Nu-i de mirare că există o rută a vinului Luxemburghez și că turiștii se înghesuie să vadă părticica această a țării. Dar până ajungem noi pe ruta vinului ne mulțumim cu o bere la barul Scott’s Pub de pe marginea râului Alzette 🙂 Nu de alta, dar are priveliște către Grund 🙂

EN: Actually, The Grund is the best part of Luxembourg, probably the most attractive part of the town and honestly, the way it has been built, as it it would stay in a ravine surrounded by all parts by steep cliffs, it makes it look even more dramatic and spectacular 🙂 We can barely believe that somewhere up, over the fortified hills and the Bock Casemates (that famous underground maze of tunnels carved into the rock), there are lots of neighborhoods with modern buildings and offices that form the financial district of the city 🙂 And the entire old town center is full of nice places, fancy restaurants (many of them proudly wearing Michelin stars :D) and wine bars as far as the eyes can see. Who would have said that such a small country produces so much good wine? Well the south-eastern part of the country, close to Moselle river, is full of wineries out of which the Luxembourgers make a gorgeous dry wine! And a sparkling one even better, cremant as they call it, a kind of local champagne. No wonder there’s actually a wine route in Luxembourg and that tourists are cramming to see this little part of the country. But until we’ll get to the wine route we’ll settle down with some local beer from Scott’s Pub, on the edge of Alzette river 🙂 As it really has an amazing view towards the Grund 🙂 








RO:  Însă revenind la capitală, înafara centrului vechi, Luxemburg nu e tocmai cea mai grozavă capitală europeancuă, întocmai cum îi umblă faima. Este trafic chiar și în weekend, în mijlocul orașului e plin de lucrări, șantiere și blocaje, după ora 6-7 seara mai toate magazinele sunt închise și în general nu mai este prea multă activitate pe străzi (însă mai știm și alte locuri în țările vecine unde lumea are aceleași obiceiuri :D), iar societatea luxemburgheză chipurile ar fi una închisă și deloc primitoare. Nu știm dacă este întru totul adevărat (probabil că doar cineva care a locuit aici poate confirma sau nu acest fapt), însă noi ne amintim de cele două luxemburgheze întâlnite în urmă cu vreo doi ani pe străzile din Nara, în Japonia, și sincer am tinde să credem că lucrurile nu ar fi tocmai așa, iar luxemburghezii n-or fi ei chiar cei mai antisociali europeni, cum le umblă faima în târg. Însă una peste alta, Luxemburg e inima Europei, și la propriu și la figurat, și oriunde ai vrea să ajungi în Europa de Vest, o poți face în maxim două ore. În plus, este unul dintre cele mai sigure state din lume, și o Doamne, știm cu toții câtă nevoie are Europa de așa ceva în zilele noastre, benzina e mai ieftină ca-n România (da, cu stupoare am aflat că un litru de benzină în patria bogaților abia dacă ajunge la un euro) iar mâncarea și mai ales alcoolul sunt ieftine ca braga (la fel și țigările, pare-se că sunt o națiune de vicioși :D). Din fericire (că să nu accentuăm frustrările de est europeni :D), traiul cel bun al luxemburghezilor se oprește aici, pentru că prețurile chiriilor sunt usturătoare. În rest, țara e plină de castele frumoase (data viitoare dăm neapărat o fugă până la castelele Vianden și Bourscheid –  în nordul țării și Beaufort – în estul țării-am găsit colecția aceasta de castele luxemburgheze, pentru cine e interesat :D) și chiar dacă are prestigiul acesta de țară lipsită de prea multe frumuseți naturale, nouă chiar ne-a plăcut 🙂 A, tot pentru data viitoare, trecem pe listă și orășelul Echternach, că tot e la graniță cu Germania 🙂 Nu știm dacă o fi datorită vremii demențiale sau a prietenilor de peste toate marile și țările lumii cu care ne-am întâlnit aici weekendul acesta, însă impresia noastră despre Luxemburg este una extrem de bună. Ba chiar am îndrăzni să spunem că după Olanda, ar putea fi o opțiune bună pentru mutat aici câțiva ani 🙂

EN: But coming back to the capital, besides the old city center, Luxembourg is not the coolest European capital, as people actually say. There is traffic even during weekend, the city center is full of work, renovation and traffic jams, after 6-7 in the evening almost all the shops are already closed and in general, there is not much activity on the streets (but we know some other neighboring countries with the same old habits :D), and some expats say that the Luxembourgers society is closed and not welcoming at all. We don’t know if that’s entirely true (only a person who has actually lived here can confirm it or not), but we remember about those two Luxembourgers girls that we’re met a couple of years ago in Nara, Japan, and honestly, we would tend to say that people here are extremely sociable. All in all, Luxembourg is in the heart of Europe, both figuratively and literally and everywhere you would want to go in Western Europe, you can do it in maximum two hours. And then, this is one of the safest countries in the world and oh Geez, we all know how much we need that in Europe nowadays. Fuel is cheaper than in Romania (yup, we were surprised to see that one liter of field in the land of rich people is just one euro) and the food and especially the alcohol are very cheap (cigarettes as well, looks like they are a nation of vicious people:D). Luckily (we’re no longer emphasizing the Est-European frustrations:D), the good prices stop here, as the rental costs are simply huge. And except all these things, the country is full of beautiful castles (next time we really have to visit Vianden and Bourscheid castles from the north and Beaufort from the east – we actually bumped into this collection of castles in Luxembourg, just in case anyone is interested :D) and even if the country is not so famous for amazing natural wonders, we really liked it a lot 🙂 Aaaah, and also for next time, we’re putting little town of Echternach on the list, close to the German border 🙂 Actually we don’t really know if all this was thanks to the amazingly good weather or to all the friends that we have met here this weekend, but our overall impression about Luxembourg is extremely good. We would even dare to say that after The Netherlands, this would be quite a good option for moving here for a couple of years 🙂
