RO: Înainte de a începe orice fel de documentare despre Gdansk, știam un lucru esențial despre acest loc, și-anume că este cel mai frumos și mai pitoresc orășel polonez. Și ca să fim foarte sinceri, am preferat să nu ne documentăm excesiv, să nu știm foarte multe despre acest oraș și să ne lăsăm surprinși. Și adevărul e că weekendul în Gdansk a fost neașteptat de frumos, liniștitor și relaxant 🙂 E drept că nu este poziționat foarte la îndemâna oricărui turist, pe coasta nordică a țării, la aproximativ trei ore de condus de capitală, și poate că de multe ori este lăsat la o parte pentru alte orașe poloneze mai renumite, însă am zice noi că merită din plin efortul de a ajunge aici. Am ales să zburăm cu LOT Airlines, cu o escală prin Varșovia. Iar de ar fi să spunem rapid câteva atuuri ale Gdansk-ului, ei bine, are ieșire la marea Baltică și-un centru vechi superb, străduțe cochete însă și plaje frumoase în apropiere, restaurante multe și mai ales mâncăruri delicioase (în frunte cu faimoasele pierogi), o adevărată obsesie pentru chihlimbar și multe, multe clădiri frumoase, construite în stil olandez. Si chiar dacă a fost distrus aproape în totalitate în urma celui de-al doilea război mondial, Gdansk este unul dintre cele mai vechi orașe-port de la marea Baltică! E incredibil câtă putere, ambiție și determinare au avut polonezii să reconstruiască orașul din temelii, să îl readucă la viață și în final să îl transforme în cel mai renumit și apreciat oraș al țării.

EN: Before starting any kind of research about Gdansk, we knew an essential thing about this place: that it is the most beautiful and picturesque Polish town. And to be honest, we preferred not to over-research, we just wanted to be surprised and not know too much about this town. And the truth is that the weekend in Gdansk was unexpectedly beautiful tranquil and relaxing 🙂 It is true that it doesn’t have quite a convenient position, on the northern coast of the country, at almost three hours driving from the capital, and maybe it’s often overtaken by other renowned Polish cities, but we would say that it is totally worth getting here. We have chosen to fly with LOT Airlines, with a stopover in Warsaw. And if we were to say a few things that we love about Gdansk, well, we would probably mention the fact that it is situated on the Baltic coast and it has a gorgeous old town center, it has fancy streets but also gorgeous beaches nearby, it has many restaurants and delicious foods (especially the famous pierogi), a real obsession for amber and many, many beautiful Dutch style buildings. And even though it was almost entirely destroyed after the second world war, Gdansk is one of the oldest seaport from the Baltic Sea! It is incredible how much power, ambition and determination the Polish people had to rebuild this town from scratch, to bring it to life and in the end to transform it in one of the most appreciated and renowned towns of the country.

RO: Ce e curios la Gdansk și complet diferit față de majoritatea orașelor europene, e faptul că nu are o piață centrală 🙂 Pozele spectaculoase cu centrul din Gdansk sunt făcute de fapt și de drept pe cea mai cunoscută stradă a lor, strada Dluga (strada Lungă), unde se află și cele mai importante clădiri și obiective turistice. Într-un capăt al său se află renumita poartă Golden Gate, în celălalt poarta Green Gate, care dă către promenada de pe râul Motlawa. Și străduțele lăturalnice sunt cel puțin la fel de spectaculoase, pline de buticuri, restaurante sau cafenele, iar dintre toate, Ulica Mariacka este poate că cea mai frumoasă și mai autentică din întreg centrul vechi al orașului. Case cu treptele de piatră în fața ușilor și verandele uriașe, atât de specifice locului, multe magazine cu bijuterii făcute din chihlimbar, suveniruri, restaurante și terase romantice, și un du-te vino continuu la orice oră a zilei, toate fac ca strada Mariacka să pară pur și simplu un platou de filmare. Însă promenada de pe râul Motlawa este partea orașului care nouă ne-a plăcut cel mai mult, chiar dacă este pe alocuri prea aglomerată și agitată. Imaginea caselor colorate văzute de pe celălalt mal al râului (ambele maluri sunt la fel de frumoase!), chiar și ciudata clădire cu macaraua uriașă (un simbol al orașului de altfel, care încă amintește de epoca înfloritoare a comerțului în Gdansk) este reprezentativă orașului. 

EN: What is quite strange about Gdansk and completely different than the most of the European cities is the fact that it doesn’t have a central market 🙂 Those gorgeous photos from Gdank’s town center are actually from the main street, Dluga Street (Long Street) where the most important and touristic objectives are. At one end of the street there is the famous Golden Gate, at the other the Green Gate, where the promenade on the Motlawa river begins. The side streets are equally spectacular, full of boutiques, restaurants and cafes, and from all of them, Ulica Mariacka is probably the most beautiful and most authentic from the entire old town center. Houses with stone stairs and over sized porches, so typical to this place, lots and shops selling amber jewelry and souvenirs, restaurants and romantic terraces, a never ending hustle and bustle at any hour of the day, all these make Mariacka street to look like a movie set. But the Motlawa river promenade is the part of the city that we loved the most, even though it might be too busy and crowded. The image of those colorful houses seen from the other bank of the river (both banks are equally beautiful!), even the weird building with that huge crane (as a matter of fact, a symbol of the city that still reminds us of the blooming trade age) it is definitely iconic for this town.








RO: Gdansk este un oraș mic și cu siguranță un weekend (cel mult un weekend prelungit) este de ajuns pentru a-l explora. Și chiar sunt suficiente lucruri drăguțe care pot fi făcute în oraș, începând cu o croazieră sau cină pe un vas de pirați, văzut orașul de sus, din roata AmberSky (sau de ce nu, din turnul primăriei, cu priveliște către Dlugi Târg), tot felul de tururi private, ba chiar și un țur Hop On Hop Off, o vizită de o zi în Sopot și Gdynia, orășele înfrățite, care formează așa numitul TriCity sau chiar și o plimbare până la castelul Malbork.

EN: Gdansk is a small town and for sure a weekend (a long weekend the most) is enough to explore it. And there are a lot of nice things that can be done in this town, starting with a cruise or dinner on a pirate ship, seeing the town from above, from the AmberSky wheel (or why not, from the Town Hall tower, with a gorgeous view towards Dlugi Targ), all kind of private tours, even a Hop On Hop Off tour, a day trip to Sopot and Gdynia, the towns that along with Gdansk form the so called TriCity and even a walk around the nearby Malbork castle.

Cazare / Accommodation

RO: În ceea ce privește cazările, ei bine, recunoaștem că nu ne-am uitat absolut deloc la hoteluri, pentru că din primul moment am fost cuceriți de apartamentele AirBnB găsite, o varietate enormaaaa de apartamente superbe, la prețuri rezonabile, situate senzațional, chiar în centrul orașului. E drept că în ultima vreme tindem să preferăm apartamente AirBnB, pentru că avem nevoie să îi pregătim mesele lui Alexei (deci avem nevoie de o bucătărie unde să îi putem găti), însă în Gdansk, chiar dacă nu am fi avut aceste constrângeri bebelusesti, tot către apartamentele AirBnB ne-am fi îndreptat. Am ales să stăm în apartamentul acesta, situat chiar în centru, aproape de Strada Lungă, și îl recomandăm cu dragă inimă! Avea absolut tot ce ne-am fi dorit pentru Alexei (de la jucării până la diverse accesorii necesare bebelușilor), cât și pentru noi (inclusiv capsule de cafea de toate tipurile sau un perete plin cu sticle de vin sau prosecco, welcome drinks, hărți, cărți turistice ba chiar și o cărticică făcută de proprietari, cu tot ce se poate vizita în Gdansk, înafara lui și restaurantele care merită încercate). Cei de la care am închiriat au de fapt două apartamente în Gdansk, amândouă la fel de frumoase, prezentate pe site-ul lor (Chill and The City).

EN: When it comes to accommodation, we have to admit that we did not even search for hotels, because from the very first moment when we started looking for AirBnB apartments, we were fascinated by how many gorgeous apartments can be found in Gdansk, at reasonable prices, with perfect locations, right in the city center. It is true that lately we tend to prefer AirBnB apartments because we need to prepare Alexei’s meals (so we need a kitchen where we can cook) but in Gdansk, even if we would have had these baby restrains, we would still have chosen an AirBnB apartment. We have rented this apartment, situated right in the center, close to the Long Street and we totally recommend it! It had absolutely everything we needed for Alexei (from baby toys to all kind of accessories needed for babies), but also for us (we even had all kinds of coffee capsules, a wall full of wine and prosecco bottles, welcome drinks, maps, touristic guides and even a book made by the owners, with everything that can be done in Gdansk, outside de town and all the restaurants that are worth trying). The owners of the apartment actually have two apartments in Gdansk, both equally beautiful, presented on their website (Chill and The City).

Transport 

RO: Nu am fi crezut, însă Gdansk stă excepțional de bine la capitolul transport în comun. De la aeroport aveam mai multe opțiuni de a ajunge în centru, inițial optasem pentru tren (era însă nevoie să schimbăm un tren pentru a ajunge în centru), așa că am ales autobuzul. Chiar dacă în general suntem adepții mașinilor închiriate (în ultima vreme rar s-a întâmplat să nu închiriem mașini în vacanțele noastre), însă în Gdansk chiar nu este deloc necesară. Chiar și dacă planurile de vizitat includ un țur în așa numitul TriCity (cele trei orașele înfrățite – Gdansk, Sopot și Gdynia), se poate ajunge extrem de ușor (și de ieftin!) cu trenul la oricare din ele. Ba chiar și taxiul este o alternativă bună de a ajunge atât în Sopot cât și în Gdansk, prețurile nu sunt deloc mari. În centrul orașului se poate merge fără probleme pe jos, distanțele sunt mici și toate atracțiile sunt concentrate în aceeași zonă a orașului. Am mai încercat și Bolt-Taxify pentru drumul de întors către aeroport, doar pentru că eram în întârziere și voiam să fim siguri că ajungem la timp (altfel am fi optat tot pentru autobuz).

EN: Who would have thought that Gdansk’s public transport is so great? We had multiple options to get from the airport to the city center, initially we have chosen the train (but we had to change once to get to the center) so we preferred the bus. Even though we generally rent a car wherever we go (we rarely don’t do that), in Gdansk it is simply not necessary to have one. Even if the visiting plans include a tour in the so called TriCity (Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia) you can get to each one of them extremely easily (and cheap!) by train. Even the cab is a good alternative to get to both Sopot and Gdansk, the prices are reasonable. In the city center it is advisable to walk, the distances are small and all the attractions are more or less in the same area of the town. We have also tried Bolt-Taxify for our way back to the airport, but just because we were quite late and we wanted to be sure that we will get to the airport in time (otherwise we would have chosen the bus again).

Restaurante / Restaurants

RO: Fără să căutăm prea multe informații despre restaurante și mâncăruri tradiționale, știam că vrem și TREBUIE să încercăm așa numitele pierogi, niște găluști cu diverse umpluturi (de la cărnuri de tot soiul la vegetarianisme care mai de care mai gustoase), fie fierte, fie prăjite. De altfel acest fel de găluști se găsește mai peste tot în Europa de Est, și chiar dacă la noi nu sunt foarte populare, bunicii din Moldova și chiar și cei din Bucovina gătesc (ori găteau) foarte des ceva similar. Le spun însă coltunasi și de cele mai multe ori sunt dulci, umpluți cu brânză dulce-am făcut această mențiune de parcă ar fi ceva foarte rar întâlnit pentru că niciunul dintre prietenii noștri nu a mâncat vreodată coltunasi :D. În orice caz, pierogi sunt parte din cultura poloneză așa că am încercat să alegem restaurante specializate pe acest tip de mâncare și slavă cerului, Gdansk este plin de astfel de locuri. Restaurantele unde se servesc aceste pierogi se numesc pierogarnia, și chiar dacă sunt foarte multe astfel de locuri, am preferat să mergem pe mâna gazdei AirBnB, care ne-a lăsat o listuță foarte bine pusă la punct cu ce ar merita încercat. Ca peste tot, în toate topurile și toate blogurile, Pierogarnia Mandu Centrum este recomandată și considerată de departe cea mai bună pieroragnia din oraș. Și chiar este, găluștile sunt demențiale, locul arată foarte cool, au un spațiu de joacă generos pentru copii iar personalul este foarte prietenos. Singurul inconvenient găsit este că nu ne-au lăsat să mixăm mai multe găluști într-o porție, pentru a încerca mai multe tipuri. Însă am putut să facem asta la Pierogarnia Stary Mlyn, unde erau cel puțin la fel de gustoase. Și cu asta am cam terminat recomandările noastre de restaurante în Gdansk pentru că… am mâncat zi de zi în unul dintre aceste două locuri :))) Lista gazdei noastre cuprindea însă și restaurantul Goldwasser, Kubicki, Bistro Familia (specific lituanian) sau Literacka (restaurant și wine bar). 

EN: Without searching too much information about restaurants and traditional foods, we knew that WE HAVE TO try the so called pierogi, dumplings with different fillings (from all kind of meats to delicious vegetarian options), rather boiled or deep fried. Actually this kind of dumplings can be found in any Eastern European country, under different names and even though in Romania these are no longer so popular, our grandparents from Moldova or Bucovina cook (or used to cook) a similar dish. They call it coltunasi and they are rather sweet, filled with cottage cheese – we made this parenthesis as if we would have invented the wheel because none of our friends has ever eaten coltunasi :D). Anyways, pierogi are part of the Polish culture, so we tried to choose restaurants that specialize in this dish, and luckily, there are plenty in Gdansk! This kind of restaurants are called pierogarnia and even though there are many good places where to try the pierogi, we preferred to follow our AirBnB host recommendations, who left us a list of restaurants that are worth trying. As every top and blog says, Pierogarnia Mandu Centrum is the best place in town to try the pierogi. And we can confirm that it is, the dumplings are great, the restaurant is really cool, they have a generous playground for kids and the staff is really friendly. The only thing that we didn’t like is the fact that we couldn’t mix more types of pierogi in one plate, so that we can try more fillings. But we could do this at Pierogarnia Stary Mlyn, where the dumplings were as good as the ones from Pierogarnia Mandu. Aaaand that’s about it with our restaurants recommendations because every single day we ate at one of these two places :)))) However, the list provided by our host included Goldwasser restautant, Kubicki, Bistro Familia (Lithuanian cuisine) or Literacka restaurant and wine bar.
