RO: Dintre toate orașele Portugaliei, Lisabona este de departe cea mai căutată și cea mai apreciată, însă tocmai faptul că se află pe locul doi în preferințelor celor mai mulți turiști ne-a făcut să alegem Porto pentru scurta noastră escapadă de weekend de februarie. Nu am fost niciodată în Lisabona, așa că nu avem termen de comparație cu capitala (deși ar fi fost interesant să o putem face, mai ales că portughezilor le place teribil și încurajează rivalitatea dintre aceste două orașe), însă Porto cel colorat și autentic are specificul lui. Renumitul vin de Porto și toate vinăriile din Gaia, cartierul colorat și tradițional Ribeira de pe marginea râului Douro (cartier care face parte din patrimoniul Unesco), podul faimos care traversează răul, oceanul care se află la doar o aruncătură de băț, străzile înguste care urcă și coboară (o plimbare prin Porto e un fel de antrenament la sală :D), clădirile autentice cu plăcuțele de faianță albastră (așa numitele azulejos), toate fac că Porto să fie un oraș perfect pentru venit în vacanță.

EN: From all Portugal’s cities, Lisbon is by far the most famous and most appreciated, but just because Porto is everyone’s second choice when it comes to Portuguese preferences, made us choose it for our weekend getaway in February. We haven’t been in Lisbon yet so we cannot compare Porto to the capital (although it would have been interesting to do it, as the Portuguese people love the rivalry from these two cities), but the colorful Porto has its own charm. The famous Porto wine and all the wineries from Gaia, the colorful and traditional Ribeira on Douro’s riverbank (this neighborhood is Unesco World heritage), the famous bridge that crosses the river, the ocean that’s just at a stone’s throw away, the sinuous narrow streets (a walk in Porto seems a real workout :D), the authentic buuldings with the azulejos blue tiles, all these make Porto a perfect place for vacation.

RO: Insa trebuie sa recunoastem ca uneori pare un oras al contrastelor. Este al doilea cel mai mare oras al Portugaliei, insa are aerul unui orasel mic, de provincie (ceea ce este minunat de altfel). Este un oras turistic, renumit pentru frumusetea sa, insa de multe ori lasa impresia ca este neingrijit si pe alocuri complet uitat de lume. Nu exageram, am vazut nenumarate cladiri si blocuri intregi complet goale, abandonate. Exista unele zone chiar si in centrul orasului care nu par tocmai cele mai sigure, insa cu toate acestea nu am simtit niciun moment ca am fi in nesiguranta. De multe ori gaseam asemanari cu Rio de Janeiro (unele zone chiar pareau niste micute favele) insa niciodata nu am avut un motiv real de ingrijorare. Insa nu ne-am fi incumetat sa petrecem prea mult timp pe strazi dupa lasarea serii. Arhitectura este cel putin interesanta, combinatii de cladiri vechi, colorate sau decorate cu faianta azulejos si cladiri moderne, in cele mai neasteptate locuri. Este un oras foarte turistic, insa spre surprinderea noastra, destul de ieftin (la cazari si mancare). Iar daca ar fi sa definim cumva orasul, cu siguranta am spune ca este… neasteptat. Este complet diferit de tot ce am mai vazut pana acum in Europa (nu am fost in Portugalia continentala pana acum) si ce este cu adevarat spectaculos este ca initial, la o prima vedere, nu pare sa impresioneze si poate fi putin greu de inteles de ce este atat de renumit si apreciat. Insa pe masura ce este descoperit devine din ce in ce mai indragit. Suna cliseic cu siguranta, insa este adevarat 🙂

EN: But we have to admit that sometimes, Porto seems the city of contrasts. It is the second largest city in Portugal but it has the vibes of a small provincial town (which is actually great). It is a touristic city, renowned for its beauty, but sometimes it seems shabby and completely forgotten bu the world. We’re not exaggerating, we’ve seen so many abandoned, completely empty buildings. There are some areas in the city center that don’t seem precisely safe, however we never felt unsafe. Sometimes we found it similar with Rio de Janeiro (some areas really looked like small favelas) but we never had a real reason to worry. But we wouldn’t have spent too much time on the streets in the evenings. The architecture is extremely interesting, a mix of old colorful buildings, decorated with azulejos tiles, and modern buildings, in the most unexpected places. It is a touristic city, but to our surprise, it is quite cheap (when it comes to accommodation and food). And if we were to define the city in only one word, we would definitely say that is… unexpected. it is completely different than everything we have seen so far in Europe (we haven’t been in continental Portugal so far) and what is truly spectacular is the fact that at the beginning, at a first glance, it doesn’t impress too much and it can be hard to understand why is it so famous and appreciated. But once it is discovered it becomes more and more beloved. It might sound as a cliche, but it is true 🙂


RO: Si probabil ca nu are cum sa fie altfel. Un oras atat de vibrant, cu muzica la fiecare colt de strada, cu vinul de Porto absolut delicios (si atat de neasteptat la gust pentru cineva care nu a mai incercat niciodata) sau berea locala Super Bock pentru cei care nu se impaca cu vinul (si cu care localnicii se mandresc atat de mult), cu savuroasele produse de patiserie numite pasteis de nata, crocante la exterior si cremoase in interior, si toate atelierele in care sunt facute (se gasesc pe toate drumurile), cu sandwhicul francesinha atat de specific locului (am primit o recomandare de la un localnic cum ca la restaurantul Brasao Coliseu ar fi o francesinha absolut minunata, iar restaurantul este cunoscut localnicilor mai mult decat turistilor). Francesinha este un fel de mancare… cel putin intimidant pentru un vegetarian 🙂 Bucataria portugheza este pentru iubitorii de carnuri, iar sandwichul francesinha nu face exceptie: contine carne de vita, sunca, un strat generos de branza si multi cartofi prajiti, iar totul este “inecat” in muuult sos, care de altfel este ingredientul secret al acestui sandwich (facut cu rosii si bere, fiecare restaurant are reteta sa secreta pentru acest sos). Practic, este o varianta mult mai calorica a sandwichului frantuzesc Croque-Monsieur 🙂

EN: And it can’t be different. Such a vibrant city, with music at every corner of the street, with its delicious Porto wine (and tasting so unexpectadly for someone who never tried it) or its local Super Block beer for the ones that don’t like wine so much (locals are really porud of their beer), with their savoury pastries called pasteis de nata, crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside, and all the workshops here they are made (there are plenty of them in Porto), with the francesinha sandwich that is so typical for this place (we received a recommendation from a local to eat francesinha at Brasao Coliseu, where they have the best francesinha in town and the place is not so known by tourists). Francesinha is quite an intimidating dish for a vegetarian 🙂 The Portuguese cuisine is for meat lovers and francesinha sandwich is no exception: it contains beef, ham, a generous layer of cheese and lots of fries, then everything is “drown” in sauce, which is actually the secret ingredient of this sandwich (made with beer and tomatoes, every restaurant has its own secret recipe for this sauce). Basically it is a way more caloric version of the French Croque Monsieur sandwich 🙂

RO: Cum am petrecut doar 45 de ore in Porto, itinerariul nostru nu a fost unul foarte incarcat, insa in cele ce urmeaza vom trece si cateva dintre locurile pe care nu am apucat sa le vedem, dar pe care le gasisem in documentarea pe care am facut-o inainte de a pleca. Nu am avut planuri ambitioase, ne-am propus doar sa ne plimbam si sa ne bucuram de cele 17 grade in plina iarna, fara sa ne impunem sa vedem cat mai multe. Am stat cazati la hotelul NH Porto Jardim (pentru ca suntem membri ai acestui lant hotelier si avem tot felul de beneficii), asa ca ne-am inceput plimbarea cu o oprire la faimosul pod Ponte Luis I, unul dintre punctele emblematice ale orasului. Podul leaga zona Ribeira a orasului de Vila Nova de Gaia (sau Gaia), care de fapt si de drept este un alt oras, renumit pentru vinariile de pe marginea raului Douro. Porto este cunoscut ca fiind Orasul Podurilor, pentru ca sunt sase poduri care trec peste raul Douro 🙂 Dintre care Ponte Luis I este cel mai apreciat, construit de un discipol al lui Gustave Eiffel, cel care a construit turnul din Paris. Noi am trecut de cel putin trei ori acest pod in plimbarile noastre din si catre Gaia, iar privelistea de sus, de pe etajul superior (unde trece metroul), este superba, superba, superba!

EN: As we only spent 45 hours in Porto, we didn’t have a huge itinerary but we also added on this list some of the places we didn’t see but we consider them worth visiting. We didn’t have ambitious plans, we just wanted to walk and enjoy those 17 degrees during winter time, without trying to see as many attractions. We stayed at NH Porto Jardim hotel (because we are members of this hotel chain and we have all sort of benefits) so we started our walk with a stop at the famous Ponte Luis I bridge, one of the most iconic points in the city. The bridge connectes Ribeira with Vila Nova de Gaia (or Gaia) which in fact is another city, renowned for its wine cellars. Porto is known as The City of Bridges, as there are six bridges crossing Douro river 🙂 Out of which Ponte Luis I is the most appreciated, built by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel the architect who built the Eiffel tower in Paris. We’ve crossed this bridge at least three times in our walks to and from Gaia and the view seen from above, from the second level of the bridge (where the metro goes) is gorgeous, gorgeous, simply gorgeous!








RO: Ribeira este fara doar si poate zona noastra preferata din intregul Porto. Pare sa fie cea mai autentica, cea mai fotogenica, cea mai pitoreasca si mai plina de viata 🙂 O multime de baruri si restaurante, cladirile cu fatadele colorate si pestrite si foarte multa lume la orice ora din zi si din noapte. Ce-i drept, o priveliste dementiala a zonei Ribeira se vede de pe celalalt mal al raului Douro, din Gaia, sau chiar din telefericul din Gaia. Am primit foarte multe recomandari sa mergem in Gaia dupa lasarea intunericul, cand Ribeira este luminata superb, insa din pacate nu am reusit sa facem acest lucru, depinzand de ora de culcare seara a lui Alexei 🙂

EN: Ribeira is without a doubt our favourite area in Porto. It seems to be the most authentic, the most photogenic, the most picturesque and the most lively area in town 🙂 Plenty of bars and restaurants, the buildings with their colorful facades and so many people during the day or night. To be honest, a really beautiful view of Ribeira can be seen from the other shore of Douro river, from Gaia, or even from the cable car from Gaia. We received many recommendations to visit Gaia after sunset, when Ribeira is gorgeously lit, but we did not manage to do it as we are on a strict schedule with Alexei’s bed time 🙂






RO: Gaia (sau Vila Nova de Gaia) este un orasel separat de Porto, care se afla pe partea cealalta a raului Douro. Este renumit pentru multitudinea de crame, care se pot vizita si unde se poate face wine tasting. Portughezii spun ca vinul de Porto este nectarul orasului si intr-adevar, are un gust aparte. Pentru cei neobisnuiti cu bauturile alcoolice mai puternice (subsemnata) poate fi insa un pic cam prea puternic. Ce ne-a placut in mod deosebit in Gaia a fost privelistea catre Ribeira, e cu adevarat fabuloasa. Priveliste pe care am vazut-o si din Teleferico de Gaia (o telegondola cu traseu scurt, de cinci minute, pana la cel de-al doilea nivel al podului Ponte Luis I). Si o scurta vizita in piata Mercado Beira Rio (de unde am luat in fiecare zi fructe pentru Alexei), cu multe restaurante si spatii de luat masa. Se pot face si tururi cu barcile rabelo pe raul Douro (barci traditionale cu care se transportau butoaiele cu vin Porto pe vremuri), insa noi nu am apucat sa mergem.

EN: Gaia (or Vila Nova de Gaia) is a town that is separated by Porto, on the other side of Douro river. It is famous for its wine cellars, that can be visited and where wine tastings can be made. Portuguese people say that Porto wine is the nectar of the city and it truly has a specific taste. For those who aren’t used with stronger alcoholic beverages (like me :D) it can be a bit too strong. But what we loved the most in Gaia was the view towards Ribeira, it is truly fabulous. We’ve seen this view from the cable car as well (Teleferico de Gaia, a cable car with 5 minutes route to the second level of the Ponte Luis I bridge). And a short visit to the Mercado Beira Rio (where we bought fruits for Alexei), with lots of restaurants and places to eat. Boat rides with the traditional rabelo boats can also be done in Gaia (long time ago these boats were used to transport the barrels with Porto wine) but we didn’t have time to try them.









RO: Inainte de a ajunge in Porto am cautat cateva puncte de belvedere de unde sa putem vedea intregul oras. Cele mai spectaculoase ni s-au parut Serra do Pilar (de unde se poate vedea si podul Luis I, si Ribeira, si centrul orasului si raul Douro pana in departare), Torre dos Clerigos (insa am renuntat rapid la acesta cand am vazut cat de mult aveam de urcat :D) si Miradouro da Vitoria, care este mai putin cunoscuta, se ajunge un pic mai greu (este ascunsa printre niste stradute inguste, nu foarte umblate de turisti) si nu arata tocmai spectaculos (era destul de murdar, in curtea unei cladiri abandonate), dar este spectaculoasa, perfecta pentru poze frumoase. Noi am ales sa mergem la punctul de belvedere Vitoria, se afla fix pe traseul nostru.

EN: Before going to Porto we searched for some viewing points where we could see the entire city. The most spectacular ones seemed to be Serra do Pillar (from where we can see Luis I Bridge, Ribeira, the center of the city and also the Douro river in the distance), Torre dos Clerigos (but we immediately gave up to this option after we’ve seen how much we had to climb :D) and Miradouro da Vitoria, which is a bit less known, harder to get to (hidden between some narrow streets, not so known by tourists) and it doesn’t look quite spectacular (a bit too dirty, in the backyard of an abandoned building) but the view is spectacular, perfect for great pictures. We have chosen Vitoria viewing point, which was precisely on our way. 




RO: Statia de tren Sao Bento este absolut superba in interior, cu peretii decorati cu placi de faianta azulejos, alb-albastra, pictata manual. Acest tip de faianta se intalneste peste tot prin Porto, pe fatadele caselor sau in interiorul lor, in cafenele, restaurante sau in statiile de metrou. Sunt peste tot si arata minunat, mai ales cele de pe bisericile faimoase din Porto. Piata Liberdade (cea cu semnul Porto) este centrul administrativ al orasului, cea mai mare si mai renumita piata din Porto.

EN: San Bento railway station is absolutey gorgeous on the inside, with its walls decorated with azulejos, white and blue hand painted tiles. This type of tiles is seen everywhere in Porto, on the facades of the houses or in their interior, in cafes, restaurants or in the metro stations. They are everywhere and they look amazing, especially the ones on the famous churches in porto. Liberdade Square (the one with the Porto sign) is the administrative center of the town, the biggest and most renowned square in Porto.






RO: Tramvaiul retro este una dintre cele mai cautate atractii turistice in Porto. Are un traseu extrem de pitoresc, pe marginea raului Douro, din centrul orasului pana in districtul Foz, unde se poate vedea oceanul (linia 1 are un traseu de aproximativ 5km pe marginea raului, insa mai exista doua linii de tramvaie vintage, linia 22 care merge doar in centru si linia 18). Desi am fi vrut sa luam acest tramvai, nu am mai apucat sa mergem cu el pentru ca in aceeasi si am facut si un tur cu autobuzul turistic Hop On Hop Off care a avut aceeasi destinatie (districtul Foz). Am ales autobuzul pentru Alexei, caruia ii plac autobuzele de orice fel 🙂 Si bineinteles, Foz do Douro trebuie adaugat pe lista – cei mai multi ar spune ca o vizita in Porto nu e completa fara a vedea cartierul Foz, acolo unde raul Douro se varsa in oceanul Atlantic. Sunt plaje frumoase, peisaje superbe si restaurante.

EN: The retro tram is one of the most appreciated tourist attractions in Porto. It has a scenic itinerary, on Douro riverside, from the town center to the Foz district, where the ocean can be seen (line 1 has a 5 km itinerary on the edge of the river, but there are 2 more vintage lines, line 22 with a route in the city center and line 18). Even though we wanted to try the vintage tram ride we didn’t not manage to do it as in the same day we made a tour with the Hop On Hop Off touristic bus that had the same destination (Foz district). We have chosen the bus for Alexei, who loves buses of all kinds 🙂 And of course, Foz do Douro needs to be added on the list – most of the people would say that a visit in Porto is not complete without seeing Fox district, where Douro river meets the Atlantic ocean. There are lots of beautiful beaches, gorgeous scenery and restaurants.


RO: Livraria Lello este considerata una dintre cele mai frumoase librarii din lume (se spune ca este locul care a inspirat libraria din Harry Potter) si este in topul atractiilor turistice in Porto. Motiv pentru care atunci cand am ajuns noi era o coada extrem de lunga la intrare (ce-i drept, am fost duminica, cand probabil este mai aglomerat decat de obicei). Nu am fi putut sa stam atat de mult si oricum nu ne-am fi bucurat de locul acesta fiind atat de aglomerat. Este un bilet de intrare de 5 euro de persoana, care de fapt este un voucher ce poate fi folosit pentru a cumpara carti din librarie. Din pacate, nu avem poze cu libraria, nici pe dinafara, nici pe dinauntru.

EN: Livraria Lello is considered one of the most beautiful ones in the world (it is said that this place inspired the Harry Potter library) and it’s on every attractions list in Porto. And that’s probably the reason why when we got there we found a huge waiting line (we’ve been there on Sunday, probably when it is crowded than usual). We couldn’t wait for so long and we wouldn’t have enjoyed this place with so many people inside, so we didn’t see it. There is an entrance fee of 5 euros per person which in fact is a voucher that can be used for buying books from the library. Unfortunately we don’t have any pictures with the library.

RO: Cafeneaua Majestic – nu citisem nimic despre aceasta inainte de a ajunge in Porto, insa cand am trecut din greseala pe langa ea, am remarcat-o. Arata minunat si daca nu ar fi dormit Alexei la pranz chiar cand am trecut pe langa ea, cu siguranta am fi intrat 🙂 Cafeneaua se afla pe strada Rua Santa Catarina, principala strada de cumparaturi din Porto, vibranta si mai mereu aglomerata. Si chiar daca nu am apucat sa le vizitam, trebuie sa le punem pe lista atractiilor in Porto: Turnul Clerigos in care se poate urca si se poate vedea o priveliste superba deasupra orasului si Palacio da Bolsa, una dintre cele mai frumoase cladiri din Porto, cu un interior absolut fabulos! Nici pe acestea nu am apucat sa le pozam, pozele de mai jos sunt facute de pe podul Luis I, de pe cel de-al doilea nivel.

EN: Majestic Cafe – we didn’t read anything about it until we arrived in Porto, but when we passed close to it we immediately noticed it. It looks great and we would have entered if Alexei wasn’t napping at that time 🙂 The cafe is on Rua Santa Catarina, the main shopping street in Porto, vibrant and always crowded. And even though we did not visit them, we have to add to this sightseeing list the Clerigos Tower, where people can climb and see a gorgeous view above the city and Palacio da Bolsa, one of the most beautiful buildings in Porto, with a fabulous interior! We didn’t photograph any of these, the below pictures were taken on Luis I bridge, on its second level.





RO: Daca este un oras baby friendly? Cu siguranta nu este tocmai baby friendly… In primul rand este un oras sinuos, cu multe strazi abrupte (foarte abrupte), cu piatra cubica si multe, multe trepte, astfel ca poate fi destul de dificil pentru parinti sa se plimbe cu caruciorul pe aceste strazi. Cel mai indicat ar fi de vazut orasul cu copilul in sistem, daca mai este o optiune buna. Pentru noi nu prea mai este, Alexei este deja greut si nu il mai pot duce prea mult in sistemul de purtare. Si nici el nu vrea sa mai stea. Insa am avut cu noi caruciorul Yoyo special pentru travel si ne-a fost destul de usor pe strazi (exceptand urcatul si coboratul treptelor :D).

EN: Is it a baby friendly town? For sure is not quite baby friendly… first of all it’s a sinuous town, with lots of steep streets (really steep), cobblestone and lots and lots of stairs, so that it can be a bit difficult for parents to wander these places with a stroller. The best option would be to see the city with the baby in the baby carrier, if this is still a feasible option. For us this is no longer the case as Alexei is already heavy and I simply can’t carry him in the babt carrier for too long. And he doesn’t want to stay in the baby carrier either. But we had the Babyzen Yoyo travel stroller and it was quite easy for us (except climbing up and down the stairs :D).




RO: Intr-adevar, dupa aproape doua zile petrecute in Porto, putem spune ca ne-a placut enorm atmosfera acestui oras, chiar daca in prima faza orasul ne-a parut putin neglijent iar unele zone de-a dreptul dezolante (cladiri abandonate, lasate in paragina, de multe ori mizerie pe strazi). Insa am inteles ca acesta este specificul orasului si in final ne-a placut enorm, cu totul, cu partile sale superbe si cu cele mai putin ingrijite.

EN: Indeed, after almost two days spent in Porto we can say that we loved the vibe of this city, even though at the beginning we found it a bit shabby and derelict (abandoned and neglected buildings, misery on the streets). But we finally understood that this how Porto is and we eventually loved it, with all its gorgeous places and neglected ones.
