EN: This is probably the most beautiful age (at least until now, we don’t have experience with older children). Going from babyhood to “toddlerhood” comes with a lot of curiosity, funny moments, cute little faces and understanding EVERYTHING that we tell them. The box of the present will be enough to make them happy, not to mention the present itself 🙂 And from this moment on, choosing appropriate toys and presents will be way more easier for the parents. There is a more variety, more involvement in games, more interactions between parents and children. Children are also more present, more absorbed by the game, they are active, the push and pull, they stack thing on top of each other, they crumble them, they recognize animals, characters, they are attracted by books suitable for their ages. It is important to help them develop their imagination and creativity through games, because at this age this is the only thing they want to do. To play, to imitate, to find correlations with the surrounding world, to discover, to hear, to feel, to touch, to see the cause and the effect of their actions. It is now the time for powerful vibrant colors, for toys that help them move, pull or push.
EN: In the list below I will also include other objects that can be offered as a gift for children, not just toys, and some of them were already mentioned in the article dedicated to babies up until one year (link here), but they can also be used after this age, sometimes even better (as the Muki book, Leea Tower, Usborne books and others). Our list of presents for children between 1 and 2 years contains the following:
COPII 12-18 LUNI / 12-18 MONTHS CHILDREN
EN: This is an extremely beautiful age (and it’s becoming better and better), when children are interested by everything that surrounds them. There are so many toys that could catch their attention (actually is captivating for them), and recommending something can be really hard. Yes, there are those brightening, noisy and over stimulating toys, which for sure would keep them busy for a long time, but we tried to avoid those. We had them and we still do (most of them where received as a present, at different occasions) but I don’t think they can learn much from them. Yes, they can keep them chill, but the purpose of a toy should be a different one, to stimulate their creativity, to learn and correlate, to develop their fine motor skills etc. Besides, from what I’ve noticed, children get easily bored by this type of toys, so I tried not to include them in this list of presents.
EN: To be honest, first steps of our children should be made barefoot, and if that happens during summertime, footwear is not actually necessary. But sometimes it is and we should choose those kind of shoes that imitate barefoot walking. We wrote more about this subject in this article and because we don’t want to repeat the same things, we will only say that our favourite barefoot shoes are the ones from Tikki (link here). They have shoes for all seasons and they are famous for the barefoot ones.
EN: First of all , for its practical utility 🙂 We didn’t have many rugs in the house and Alexei was often playing directly on the floor (which honestly, we didn’t find a problem). But sometimes it can be better to play on a warmer surface. We found many play rugs at adinish.com, with all sort of prints. We have a gorgeous one with a railway and also the wooden train from the same set from Kid’s Concept (link here for the rug and here for the train).
Antemergator / Walker
EN: We talked about walkers in the article dedicated to presents for babies (link here), so we won’t say too much here. For the parents that agree using them, we’ll just mention that we found really cute ones at catenlunasinstele.ro store (link here). We used a walker without abusing too much (we tried to encourage him to stand up alone and start walking without forcing him). For the children that are already walking, this can be an interesting toy beause they will find interesting to push any object from the house, chairs or even their own stroller 🙂
EN: Any kind of learning tower that lifts them so that they can be at the same level with the parent, in order to do different activities. There are many learning towers, some of them have some other games included, others can be transformed in other objects for playing. We have the one from Leea Toys and we use it a lot (daily) since Alexei was only one year old. It is true that it becomes more and more useful as time goes by, there are other activities that can be done and Alexei is more interested (for instance by the slide, which we can use in the cold season when we can’t go out of the house). Leea Tower can be ordered from Leea Toys website (link here).
Carticele Primele Cuvinte / First Words Books
EN: Ever though this type of books can be used before the age of one year, they will be more appreciated once they will start saying a few words. There are sets of books, on categories, they have big, clear images with objects or animals and the little ones will be fascinated by them. There are many stores that sell them, we have a set from emag.ro (link here).
Jucarii cu legume si fructe / Toys with fruits and vegetables
EN: These are very good for learning fruits and vegetables. They probably know them already from the meals but palying with them will make them recognize them easily. There are lots of sets, we have one bought from The Netherlands but we found some cute ones at catenlunasinstele.ro store (link here for the vegetables and here for the fruits).
Jucarii cu animale / Toys with animals
EN: A set of farm animals will for sure be interesting for our little ones. They are discovering animals now, they like to imitate them and games like “how does the dog/sheep/horse/etc do?” will be extremely fun for them. We had a set of wooden animals found at elcokids.ro (link here).
EN: This type of books will always fascinated the young children. We recommended this type of books also in the article dedicated to babies presents (link here), but they will definitely be more useful after one year when they will start recognizing the objects in the pictures. They will relate easily with the reality and they will find them more and more interesting. There are books for learning colors, numbers, letters, shapes, words. We made a small selection below, these will be the next books that I would like to order for Alexei soon (link here for more flap books on usborne.com website).
EN: Usborne books are so many and so diverse, I’m sure we will always find books that will be suitable for any age. Finger painting books are recommended after one and a half (maybe even two), but we will include them in the 12-18 months category as Alexei really loved them from the first moment we used them. Of course, the books include several activities (to draw different objects, animals or people with the dots made with the fingers) but for them it will be fun just to spot the book in all the possible ways, without having a logic. The simple fact that they will see colorful dots will be fun for them.
EN: Most probably they will start to be interested by this kind of books after the age of one and a half, but it’s worth trying before. Usborne has many sticker books (link here), we have chosen something simple for the first one, with animals that he could easily recognize, so to increase his interest in the book. We didn’t have luck at the beginning but then he accepted them and now he really likes them. However, he’s still not so thrilled about the stickers, he doesn’t like having them glued on his fingers 🙂 So he just obseves how I add the stickers in the book, without touching them 😀
EN: Honestly, they should invent such pools for adults as well :)) That’s how tempting they seem! The little ones will be thrilled by any round toys, not to mention an entire pool full of balls! We didn’t know about the existence of these pool, so we bought a simple set of normal balls from Jumbo for Alexei (he still loves them at 18 months) but we found some amazing pools at davidandthea.com, they really look great (link here).
EN: As soon as they start walking (most of the children start walking between 12 and 18 months), the biggest fun for our little ones is to pull toys after them 🙂 The cutest toys we’ve found are the ones from adinish.com (link here), they are made from wood and they really look very nice. There are plenty of pull toys made of plastic but we try to avoid those as much as possible, so we will not recommend such toys in this article.
EN: We’re talking about those big puzzles, with shapes that are easy to recognize, made for small children. Most of them have shapes with animals or objects that are used in daily life, sso they are useful for children to recognize and sort shapes. We found some great ones at Zara Home, which we have and use very often (link here and here).Jucarii de Stivuire / Stacking toy
EN: We recommended this type of toys in the article dedicated to babies (link here), but those were suitable for children under one year. Children will continue to be interested in stacking toys, they will actually be more enthusiastic, more aware when they will build (and of course crumble :D). We found some big foam cubes, lightweight, colorful and printed with numbers at adinish.com (link here) or some wooden cubes from adinish.com (link here) or davidandthea.com (link here).
EN: I would normally say that Lego Duplo is the perfect building toy but up until one and a half, they haven’t been so tempting for Alexei. Even though they are way much easier to use than the normal Lego pieces, bigger and easier to combine, they need quite a lot of precision. Which an 18 months old child doesn’t have it yet. So it would be better to use building pieces that are softer and easier to combine, as Clemmy (from Clementoni – we found them at emag.ro, link here) or Mega Blocks (link here).
Jucarii Crosetate / Knitted Toys
EN: Alexei hasn’t been so interested in such toys, but after one year (actually after one an a half) he truly discovered them. At 18 months he started to love a bunny (a Miffy bunny, famous in The Netherlands) that he sleeps, eat, plays with now, as if he would be his best friend 🙂 So a stuffed toy might be a good idea, we found some adorable ones on @soranacroseteaza instagram page (link here) and at davidandthea.com (link here), also knitted.
COPII 18-24 LUNI / 18-24 MONTHS CHILDREN
EN: This is the moment when toys like Mukibooks (which we recommended in our first article dedicated to babies), cubes, toys, stuffed toys, tents or any other toys will be used in totally different ways. They start to develop their imagination in a fabulous way and the cutest thing is the fact that they want to reproduce everything they see at the adults that surround them. They want to be grown ups, to be chefs, carpenters, doctors, mother of father 🙂 And through role playing we help them in all these games and stimulate their creativity. No matter how much time and involvement this age requires (playing is becoming a serious part of children’s life and they want their parents close to them), it is an amazing age and they are extremely cute 🙂
Creioane, Carioci, Acuarele / Pencils, Felt Pens, Water Colors
EN: To be honest, we started drawing, coloring and painting way before 18 months, but most of the drawing products (especially felt pens and water colors) are recommended after the age of 18 months. We’ve searchedfor quite a long time some products that are sitable for babies, without toxice substances and that can be easily washed and we found many of these at micostore.ro (link here).
Bucatarie / Kitchen
EN: At this age, our little ones start to imitate everything that we do. So any “grown ups” activity will fascinate them. As they probably see their mother cooking for them, th ekitchen will be tempting for both girls and boys. Actually, we don’t like gender specific toys. There are many kitchens available on the market, we really had to do an in depth research: the one from Ikea is one of the most famous (link here), there is one at Lidl as well (link here, in The Netherlands it can be ordered online), adinish.com has a nice kitchen from Kid’s Concept brand, which includes lots of accessories (link here) and Cate-n Luna Si-n Stele has kitchens from many brands like New Toys, a Dutch brand (link here), Jabadabado, a Swedish brand (link here) or the famous Little Dutch kitchen, which we really love (link here).
Banc de lucru / Work bench
EN: Also in the role playing category, the work bench can be extremely tempting for the little ones. To spin, pull, mend as a real carpenter 🙂 We continue to be faithful to Little Dutch brand (we made an obsession for it) and we’ll mention their work bench that can be bought from Cate-n Luna Si-n Stele store (link here).
Set Modu Explorer / Modu Explorer Set
EN: This is the type of toy that can be reinvented in so many ways. What is really interesting is the fact that it has some really large and easy to assemble pieces, through which different objects can be created (car, walker, rocket, swing). In this videoit can be seen exactly what can be built with these pieces. This is a product that can gather the entire family to play, starting with the construction of the toy. It can be a really different and ingenious Christmas present 🙂 We found it on davidandthea.com website (link here).
Tricicleta / Tricycle
EN: Alexei started to use the tricycle without pedals since 12 months but the moment he really used it correctly and coordinated was when he started walking and even more after that. Tricycles are amazing for children, not only because they are so much fun but also because they cn be really useful for them, they develop their motor skills, their coordination and balance. What should be taken in consideration when choosing a tricycle is to make sure it is solid, it does not easily turn over and we would say to avoid the plastic ones. We have a Tiny Tot Bamboo tricycle from Kinderfeets which can be found at jucariialtfel.ro (link here) and that can be later transformed into bicycle. It has an adjustable chair and it basically “grows” with the child.
Lego Duplo
EN: Or Lego for babies 🙂 We didn’t think that this will be so interesting for Alexei, but he simply loves Lego pieces. These are bigger and easier to assembly that the classic Lego pieces and they are really great for young children. Alexei was interested in these even before one year but he used them more after 13-14 months (at 18 months he’s already mad about building, crumbling, building again). For younger children it might be a bit better to use the building pieces from Clemmy or Mega Blocks. Lego Duplo can be found at Lego stores or online at different shops. We usually order them from emag.ro (link aici).
Calut balansoar / Rocking horse
EN: I honestly thought that this toys is precisely that kind of toy that looks great in pictures, but it’s not actually used by the child. And I was sooo wrong about it. Since he had a rockign horse (somewhere around one year), Alexei was fascinated by it. We avoided using it too much as I was afraid he could hurt himself, but after the age of 18 months it has become one of his favourite toys. We have a wooden rocking horse with a very simple design, from Cate-n Luna Si-n Stele store (link here) but we found some really nice ones at adinish.com as well, they have a textile cover, fur or other fluffy fabrics and could be a bit more comfortable that the wooden ones (link here for the one in the picture below).
EN: Yes, parents will not like the idea of singing at the drum at first hour in the morning but children are starting to be fascinated by instruments. We noticed Alexei started to like them in a vacation, when he heard for the first time a man in the street singing at a guita. He didn’t want to leave, he was totally captivated, he was literally not moving. So a musical instrument as a toy can be a really good idea for a present. We found this kind of toys at catenlunasinstele.ro store (link here and here) but most of these toys (the nicest ones, like guitar, flute, mouth organ) are recommended for bigger kids (over 3 years). We found a nice wooden drum at nichiduta.ro website (link here) and an adorable xylophone at adinish.com (link here).
Set de matusa si faras / Set of broom and dustpan
EN: I added this set after the article was almost finalized, because I’ve been with Alexei at a playground where they had brooms for children and half of the time spent there he cleaned the floors 🙂 I did not expect that so he definitely should get a broom soon 🙂 We found a nice set at adinish.com (link here).
Masini / Cars
EN: Fire trucks, ambulances, farm equipments, construction cars – anything will be fascinating for them. We found a nice set of wooden cars at catenlunasinstele which contains all type of cars (link here) but there are many other nice options. We loved the Scandinavian design ones from Sebra, from the same store (link here, here and here).
EN: The famous Ikea railways, they need no presentation. There are plenty of sets at Ikea, with both railways and trains or cars. I never thought they will be so successful, but he uses them every day. Actually, all the Ikea toys are really nice for children, simple, with a clean design, very easy to play with (link here).
EN: For sure every house with children has its specific chaos (toys all around the house) so we would recommend a present for the parents who love discipline 😀 And that’s a storage back 🙂 We found some really cute paper ones at adinish.com (we actually have these, link here and here) but catenlunasinstele.ro also have some adorable textile ones (link here).
