Living in Alberta – Guest Post

EN: If you don’t know much about Canada, let me summarize it for you in a few words: maple syrup, two official languages, ten provinces, east coast lighthouses, west coast mountains, and one thousand islands in between.

EN: So far I have had the pleasure to live in three provinces and got to explore a bit of one other. Alberta is where I call home now and I could not be happier. I live ten minutes from Calgary and when I first moved here back in 2012 I was impressed by the southern-like hospitality that came accompanied by people’s western charm.  A few fun things about Calgary: in the winters we get warm winds called Chinooks and the temperature can increase as steeply as from -20C to +10C overnight.  So winters here are actually very pleasant and with having the most hours of sunshine out of all the big Canadian cities, we are in luck. Despite the fact it is a large and fast growing city, it still has that somewhat small town feel – traffic is rarely an issue, people usually congregate around the same hotspots, and overall, most people’s past times revolve around the same activities: hiking, skiing, snowboarding; in other words, mountains, mountains, mountains.

EN: Living within one hour’s drive from the Rocky Mountains – away from the city life and straight into the nature haven – is an incomparable experience to anywhere I have lived before. The Canadian Rockies are marbled around surreal national and provincial parks. Turquoise lakes and rivers fill the landscape with uncanny beauty. One of the most notable rivers is the Bow River that makes its way from the Rockies into Calgary and all the way into the prairies. Just like the Bow River, Lake Louise and other spectacular bodies of water, derive from glaciers nearby. Glacier water is, as expected, cold but very clean and refracts the unbelievably beautiful blue-green color that you see in pictures and may think it was the wonders of Photoshop.

EN: The Rockies offer a great getaway for numerous activities. The options are endless. Personally, I have only explored a sand grain of the plethora of trails, peaks, rivers and lakes around here. Taking a trip into the mountains is beautiful in any season whether it’s about being active, exploring the nature, or enjoying the view with a cold beer from a local brewery in the summer or a hot chocolate in the winter; there is something to do for everyone!
