Islanda – Alafoss Icelandic Sweater

RO:

Cine n-are ie, sa ridice mana sus!

EN:

Iceland is The Country of Ice and Fire. Wherever you look, you’ll find countless volcanoes and glaciers, and no matter what you do or what season you choose for visiting Iceland, you’ll have to face the unpredictable weather, which can change hourly. Well ok, maybe during summertime is not that bad as during wintertime, but even so, the wind is powerful, the temperatures can get lower than you expect and if it starts raining, oh well, you’ll find yourself on the verge of pneumonia and guess what, you’ll probably finish all the Coldrex supplies from the very first day. So it is quite mandatory to be well equipped while visiting Iceland. And if you’re interested in some traditional fashion, you probably already heard about the lopapeysa, the Icelandic sweater. Icelanders are so proud to wear their traditional clothing, as well as we, the Romanians, have lately become much more oriented towards our traditions, culture and traditional costumes! Who doesn’t have a traditional Romanian blouse, hands up! And the fact that the Icelandic sweaters are 100% handmade, knitted by locals, bring a lot of additional value to these traditional pieces of clothing! They use authentic sheep wool, and the yarn (called lopi) is so good and resistant that it never unfolds and never leaves flock wool. And the best part is the circular wool neck collar, with traditional design.

Each sweater has a personalized label which contains the name of the person who knitted it, and the models are in general classic. Either simple, round neck, either as a cardigan with a hidden zipper in the front or wooden buttons. And when it comes to colors, you’ll find everything that you want, although in general we’ve noticed that Icelanders prefer beige or grey. We found some amazing models at Alafoss, a knitting factory and boutique a little bit outside Reykjavik, in Mosfellsbaer village. They have everything you need in terms of knitting materials, starting with the famous sweaters or different accessories like handmade hats, gloves, wool neck collars or even elf shoes 🙂 And if you like knitting or crocheting, you’ll find what you need at the haberdashery inside the store. Ok, we have chosen a warmly and mushy green sweater, so that it will match the beautiful Icelandic landscapes! And now that we are so well equipped, let’s hit the road Jack!
